This paper examines the impact of the Oprah Book Club™ on the literary field.  Using Bourdieu's concepts of cultural, social and symbolic capital, I analyze how Oprah has altered and affected the consumption of 'high' and 'low' art.

I submitted this paper for my Master's thesis at the University of Chicago.  It explores the postmodern mindset in the age of global commercialism and ‘universal community’ through the relation of kitsch and shit in Milan Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
